GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR RUG Surfing on a loose rug is fun when you’re five, but we suggest a pad underlay to keep rugs in place. A pad will extend the life of the rug, help muffle sound and add cushioning (size the pad one inch smaller than the rug). We like polyester felt pads (“Super Movenot” 6' x 9' nonslip felt rug pad, $59, rugsexpress.com), which tend to last longer than the more common foam ones. It’s key to keep a rug clean—leaving in dirt erodes the fibers and can contribute to rot. Flatwoven rugs can be swept and vacuumed (do both sides), but watch out for fringe and beware super-strong suction that can damage weaving. To deep-clean a rug, take it to a pro.
