TIP: FITTING YOUR SHADE
With a table lamp, you should never have to stare at a naked bulb, which can be as disconcerting as looking at the sun. On a properly placed lamp with an appropriate shade, the bulb and the stem should not be visible. (With a floor lamp, the bulb may be visible—try a lower- wattage translucent incandescent, which is easier on the eyes.) Aside from this, there are no hard and fast rules, so it’s best to take your lamp to the store when buying a new shade.
