Wonder Walls: The Bon Vivant

Dorothée Meilichzon, founder of French design firm Chzon, tells the Domino team what she wants on her walls this Spring.

Dorothée Meilichzon, founder of French design firm Chzon, has spent the past several years remaking large swaths of Paris’s interior landscape. Her clubs, cafés, and hotels—including Hotel Panache, the Grand Pigalle, and Hotel Bachaumont—respect the city’s historic Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture while clearly keeping in the 21st century. Meilichzon designs every part of a place, down to the typefaces for signs and menus, and she has an eye for pairing custom and vintage patterns. “I love anything handmade, so I work a lot with artists, painters, and pattern-makers,” she says. “I’m very sensitive to graphics.”

Pro Tip: Mix Materials for Added Depth
“The patterns with the longest staying power bring texture to a space, and I love the juxtaposition of natural and metallic materials. Above a blue velvet banquette at FISH Club in Paris, I used this gold fish scale wallpaper, handwoven from sisal, to play up the contrast between dark and light.”
