Yesterday, my husband came back from the laundromat buzzing. Over the past week, he had been trying out the Open Spaces x Onsen Laundry Hamper, a major upgrade from his previous setup: a Flying Tiger basket for corralling dirty sock and tees, and an IKEA Frakta for hauling it all to the laundromat at the end of our block.

If there’s anyone I trust with a review of a laundry-related product, it’s him. Every week, he carefully sorts his machine washables from his hang-drys, and he never strays from his go-to detergent, Persil. He invested in a slim but stable drying rack, and he can interpret laundry symbols without having to look them up.

In this exclusive interview, I asked him about everything that makes the hamper great, and what he’d change if he had the chance.

After just a week of use, you headed off to the laundromat the happiest I’d seen you on laundry day in a while—what’s so awesome about this hamper?

It’s just so great. The inside bag unzips out of the hamper and turns into a duffel that you can sling over your shoulder. What I had before was a basket I’d owned forever, and it was about half the size, so it was always overflowing. This one is sleeker, but it fits so many more clothes. (Editor’s note: The bag is 60L.) It also has a top so that my dirty clothes don’t stink up the room, which I really like.

Tell me more about this interior bag.

It’s a thick canvas and has a zipper around the rim and zips out and turns into a double drawstring bag, which is really convenient for taking to the laundromat. Now I don’t have to use a separate bag. I was using IKEA bags before, and this is so much easier to carry down the block.

I noticed it came in a flat box, but I didn’t see you put it together. What was that like?

It was supereasy. It’s kind of like a tent—it has four poles to add structure. You just fit them into the top and bottom holes, and the fabric outside fits around them. It took me five minutes.

Any downsides to it?

Nope. If there were other colors, that’d be cool, but I also like that it’s white, so it’s not super-visible.

If I got one, would you do my laundry from now on?

What?

Not a no! Thank you for your time.
