There are a handful of products interior designers use again and again because they’re just that good. In this series, we ask a pro to share a current holy grail item.
Porter and Hollister Hovey, the sisters and designers behind Hovey Design, have staged over 600 spaces in New York. While they have a big warehouse of furniture and accessories to pluck from when they’re working on a project, there is one piece they reach for almost every single time: IKEA’s Lindbyn Mirror. They’ve dubbed it the “most versatile, impactful workhorse” in their collection, and they’re not exaggerating.
“It truly works with every single design style. It’s also lightweight and easy to install, which is vital for us,” says Hollister. Framed in sturdy aluminum, they’ve never had one break (and all they use to mount them are two small drywall screws). Even if it ever were to crack in transit, it wouldn’t be a headache to replace since the product retails for just $150.
But perhaps what the Hoveys love most about the Lindbyn Mirror is its grand size. The diameter measures 43 ¼ inches, which means, depending on where you hang it, it can reflect entire rooms. Or, in the case of the designers’ latest job, where they staged two rental penthouses at One Domino Square, the New York City skyline.

“We tend to use them most on non-dominant walls, the ones that reflect the main attraction or a great window,” shares Hollister, adding that they’ll tuck them over credenzas and consoles that receive a nice side glance, too. The only place they try to avoid hanging it? Opposite a door. “It’s considered bad feng shui, so we try to abide by that cautionary rule,” says Hollister.
IKEA’s Lindbyn product isn’t the only mirror these pro stagers love. They’re also big fans of one by Hamilton Hills that’s available on Amazon for $72, especially when they’re updating a bathroom. “We’re really into classic chrome for bathrooms—it’s worked for centuries. No need to be trendy!” says Porter. Thanks to these experts, we’ve got a lot of reflecting to do.
