It’s amazing how much a single pillow can change—or bring together—a room. Think about it: A simple IKEA sofa like this Söderhamn sectional is completely inoffensive as is. We would even say it’s got strong bones. But add an embroidered pillow in a bold color paired with a textured neutral pillow (maybe bouclé), and suddenly your seating has a vision.
In a discovery that hits pretty close to home, we recently came across a pillow from H&M that immediately reminded us of Domino chief creative officer Kate Berry’s living room. Her lounge area is anchored with the Hay Mags sofa in a marshmallow hue, topped with a pair of custom citron throw pillows. While she had hers made over a decade ago with Silk Trading Co. velvet, we can’t help but see a sibling in the olive green cotton velvet cushion covers H&M released as part of its spring collection. If you’re looking to add a punch of personality to your couch, you can’t do much better for $13. Made of 100 percent cotton velvet, they’re relatively easy to care for—just make sure to machine wash on cold and line dry or dry-clean.
When it comes to styling, you can take a page from Berry’s book and go one of two ways. In her previous apartment, she mixed the citron pillows with a slew of brightly colored and patterned options, including two floral Josef Frank picks, for a maximalist look. But today, she’s been known to take a more pared-back approach, situating them alongside earthy shades of brown and beige. Another idea: Create cohesion between multiple lounge spaces in your home and buy a little family of the 20-by-20-inch pillows to sprinkle on couches and chairs.
And while you’re thinking about spring upgrades, take a virtual stroll through some of the other gems from H&Ms newest drop—wavy-edge planters, massive papier-maché vases, cobalt blue bedding, and stout little chairs await.
