There’s an unmistakable Americana touch to Schoolhouse products. Based in Portland, Oregon, the 20-year-old home and lighting brand brings a craft edge to everything it makes, whether that’s floral quilts, steel or ceramic sconces, or wool rugs. It has also put a premium on keeping a large portion of production U.S. based with a local factory, where everything from its original pendant lamps and wall clocks to table lamps are designed and assembled in-house. When Schoolhouse isn’t making its own pieces, it is sourcing them from other American manufacturers or ethical global sources. Collaborations with the likes of Clare V., East Fork, and Hygge & West have expanded the brand’s reach even further. You could say modern heirlooms are kind of the company’s thing.
We’re huge fans, of course, and so are numerous homeowners and designers across the country. If you’re seeking the best things to buy at Schoolhouse, look no further than our home tours—they’re filled with the hits and a few new classics.
Alabax Lighting
The Alabax line of lighting includes surface mounts and sconces, in various colors and sizes, that were inspired by circa-1951 General Electric fixtures. See pieces from the collection in a breezy Long Island kitchen as well as a funky New England mid-century bathroom.

Plaid Wool Rug
It’s handwoven in India from natural-dyed wool, comes in four color combos, and is versatile enough for a family home in Los Angeles and a studio apartment-office in Portland. What’s not to love?

Stillwater Floral Quilt
The Stillwater quilt is a ubiquitous Schoolhouse design. Made in Portugal with 100% cotton, it’s the bed covering we’ve seen in all kinds of home tours, from a Pacific Northwest rental bedroom to a colorful California ranch. While the auburn colorway seems to be favored, we’re drawn to the Juniper; it’s blue and green hues feel wintry without being too pegged to holiday.

Velvet Wool Circle Pillow
This sweet design is as cute as a button. With one side covered in wool and the other in velvet, each adds a jewel-toned punch wherever it lands—like the cushy blue sofa in a cute Los Angeles retreat.

Gantry Pendant Lamp
Assembled in Schoolhouse’s Portland factory, the angular steel Gantry pendant lamp is a groovy ’70s-inspired design that would be just as nice on its own as in a duo, like in a Bloomington, Indiana, split-level.

Sidnie Lamp
The mushroom-shaped shade of the Sidnie lamp is sloped in just the right way, and a matte green or natural brass finish gives it just the right flourish. We think the moss color looks particularly appealing when paired with darker wood, as in a garage-turned-guesthouse in Utah.

Radar Sconce
Task lighting at its most utilitarian. The Radar sconce is assembled in the Portland factory and nods to the design of a light fixture from an industrial-parts washer. It makes a just-right reading light for a cozy kid’s room in Brooklyn (and also comes in a plug-in version).

Ruth Knob
A cabinet knob as versatile as they come. The Ruth is made from solid brass and available in four finishes (like matte black and polished nickel). It can go modern farmhouse, as it did in one Napa Valley bathroom, and it can fit right into colorful dining and bar areas in Nashville.

Union Pendant Lamp
A box to check when giving a new build character: add vintage-inspired lighting. The Union pendant lamp brings just that kind of touch; plus it comes in a number of different lengths for a little customization. Solid brass construction makes it durable, and a milky glass shade means just the right glow.

Clare V. Collection
What’s better than seeing designs in a creative’s own home? That’s the case with fashion designer Clare V.’s collection for Schoolhouse, shot on location in her Los Angeles Craftsman and featured by us. It’s filled with stripes, color, and first-rate cool.
