When I was in Copenhagen earlier this year scouting for trends during the city’s annual design festival, I saw seaweed as soundproofing, stainless steel dessert cups used in every which way, and wood furniture masquerading as resin. There were rooms upon rooms of furniture to consider, and while Faye Toogood’s latest coffee table was a beauty and I spotted Sebastian Herkner’s creations in what felt like every exhibition, there was a multifunctional design I couldn’t shake.
During a visit to Audo House, Audo’s fluid concept space in the Nordhavn neighborhood, I got a peek at the brand’s fall launches, including new additions to its Brasilia seating line and Hashira lighting collection. But what stayed with me was the kind of problem-solving furnishing that many people need, whether you live in a small city apartment or a sprawling home with guests aplenty: an actually attractive sleeper sofa.
Offset Sofa Bed
Aftering catching a glimpse of one pulled out and made up with bed linens in a hotel room at Audo House, I peppered our host with questions about the good-looking piece. Will it be available in the U.S.? Does it come in multiple sizes? Will it be upholstered in the cozy bouclé that I associate with Audo? Thankfully, the answer to all three was “yes.”
The Offset sofa bed is an extension of a line designed by Danish studio Norm Architects, a practice that has regularly collaborated with Audo over the years (the Carrie portable lamp and bottle grinders are Norm’s, too). The sofa bed doesn’t give up any of the style of the original: an architectural shape with narrow armrests and plush feather-foam back cushions; an elegant yet inviting bench cushion; a nearly flush base. The sleeper component varies for each size: The two-seater extends so your head is at the backrest, and the three-seater pulls out sideways.
Seven different fabrics isn’t a huge selection, but it’s more than enough for the neutral inclined out there. And prices range from $5,630 to $7,890—not a budget pick, but when you consider being able to bypass buying a bed frame and mattress, it starts to look pretty good. A note on ordering: You’ll want to plan ahead. It’ll be a few months before one is ready to ship. But, on orders over $100, you’ll get free U.S. ground shipping and in-home delivery rates as low as $199.
While the Offset is available in that larger size at 85 inches wide, it’s the narrower option that had us really excited; you rarely see a 57-inch-wide sofa look so good, and to add on a sleeper component? I’d say there’s very little out there that rivals it.
