Dull hair got you feeling down? Worry not, my friend. We’ve got the quick solution—straight from your kitchen!—that will soften, deeply cleanse, and remove all traces of summer: sunscreen, product build-up, and bad decisions (okay, probably not any of those heat-of-the-summer bad decisions, but worth a try nonetheless).
“Sunscreen in the hair is very difficult to remove, especially when you have porous hair,” says Domino's go-to hair guru Christophe Robin. “It goes inside the hair, not only the hair shaft, and you can’t just wash it out, it won’t work.”
First off, how can you tell your hair has sunscreen and product build-up? It doesn’t shine, it feels thick and less pliable, and it’ll break easier.
Yikes, I have that I think. What do I do?!
Take a deep breath, and then head to the kitchen. Because that's where you'll find your solution for bouncy, detoxed hair.
“The only thing that will work to remove residues is a thick oil, you have to push out the sunscreen and gunk,” says Robin. Specifically, he's talking about argan oil, almond oil, grapeseed oil, or even olive oil.
Just lightly coat the mid length and ends of hair; you don’t need it for your scalp. Leave it on overnight (you can protect your pillowcase with a towel).
Now, most importantly, use a clarifying shampoo in the morning. “That will put your hair back to zero,” notes Robin. A few clarifying favorites are Bumble and Bumble Sunday Shampoo, Christophe Robin Clarifying Shampoo, and R+CO Oblivion Clarifying Shampoo.
One hack I learned at Canyon Ranch Lenox, after an incredible Ayurveda treatment that covered me literally head to toe in a warm herbed sesame seed oil, is if the oil is really thick in your hair, apply shampoo to hair while it’s dry. Massage it in, and slowly add water, tiny bit by tiny bit. You’ll get a deeper lather this way. (And glance at this guide if you need more tips for washing hair.)
Then, put on a moisturizing mask—ideally one without parabens, silicones, and polymers—on the ends of hair to “restore the lupidic film and elasticity inside the hair.”
Rinse really, really, really well. And bam! Shiny, bouncy, clean hair, without a trace of summer worries and woes.
