Neutral walls and bare floors are the perfect blank canvas. How can you make it your own? Good question. Inspired by some of our favorite photos on Pinterest, learn how to add pops of color, personal touches, layers, and texture into your own home. Goodbye, boring.

take the party outside
Have an al-fresco brunch this weekend–French doors and whitewashed floors create an airy space to move breakfast from indoors to out back. Display your favorite accessories on floating shelves. With a space like this, no one will want to leave the kitchen. (And can you blame them?)
put color on display
Ditch the dust skirt and heavy rug to create a lighter space. Tie in natural texture with baskets to catch loose clothes, and a thin rug to cozy up the space. The white iron bed adds a vintage, rustic-feel–keep the theme going with plain white bedding and a simple quilt. Displaying your favorite new dress is a nice way to add a touch of color.
make an entrance
Whites and woods feel at home together in this entryway. Choose a colorful photograph to display above a raw wood bench–one that makes a statement. Pepper in a stack of your favorite titles (not too neatly), and leave last night’s shoes, well, hanging around, for a lived-in feel.
Does your kitchen need an upgrade? Paint the walls a midnight hue to make your appliances really stand out. Create and hang a floating shelf in the same color to store olive oils and fresh veggies. The hanging wire basket and old stovetop create a rustic vibe– the perfect setting to prep a country lunch.
Carry the white wood from floor to ceiling. Light the fire on a chilly autumn morning, and dress the mantel with a fresh bouquet from the garden. The traditional tie-ins from the gilt mirror to the brass candlesticks create a dynamic contrast with this cozy country feel.
Pop some color into an all-white room with a geometric piece of art. A bucket of wood near the fireplace leaves the space feeling cozy year-round. Layer in monochromic accessories, and throw down a thick seagrass rug to add texture.
be bold with accents
Want to make a serious statement? Step one: paint your fireplace black. This unexpected hue will give any room character–and a bit of edge. Step two: add in texture with a striped throw and natural rug. Toss in a pink-pastel chair, green fig tree, and viola!: you’ve just created your own private oasis.
embrace boyish charm
The ultimate masculine mix will make for a striking entryway. Layer a dark rug onto black floors to create a monochromatic base. Fill a wall with abstract art in neutral colors to keep the palette clean. An artisanal bench completes the look–an opening act for the rest of the home.
turn up the light
Craving a cozy reading nook? Ditch the walls for French doors to build your own sunlit retreat. Create a makeshift bookshelf at the foot of the bed. Crack open this week’s biography, open the doors, and let the natural light flow in.
ditch the boring bathroom
How to make a plain bathroom a knockout? Start with a black claw-foot tub. Hide away your shampoo bottles and opt for a cleaner look. A striped fouta, matching stool, and bouquet of greens are perfect garnishes. Relaxing bubble bath? Check.
start a new trend
Let’s change up the standard gallery wall. Float shelves to house leaning artwork and books. Store your record collection in neat bins to save space. Make your display floor-to-ceiling to maximize space, and add in souvenirs and photos for a personal touch. Finally, a place for the kids’ “abstract” art.
open the door
Find a door that wows. This striped number is a standout piece–combined with a geometric mirror and stained wood floors, this entry is one you’ll be sure to notice. Swing it open, and let the neighbors covet.
eat in style
A fresh update for the dining room–mix mismatched chairs with a sturdy farm table as a setting to drink your morning coffee. Hang a newspaper clipping (or favorite mag cover) in a black frame over the mantel, and opt for a muted color-palette. Sip, and repeat.
relish in the past
Sometimes clutter can make for the most interesting spaces. Hang a sixties-esque gallery wall to create a feeling of nostalgia and whimsy. Layer in the poster from last summer’s concert, your dad’s favorite army jacket, and that vase you found on the streets of Portugal. Make this space your moment.
