When we visited the House for Hope home situated just outside of Nashville, we were blown away by the modern farmhouse. But one room particularly caught our eye. Artist and designer Gina Julian created the teenage girl’s room for the designer show house, and it was filled with thoughtful details that are easy to replicate in your own home. Keep reading to hear directly from the designer!

What was your inspiration for the room?
I love to use original art as the jumping-off point in many of the spaces I design. In this case I painted a small study of “Luca” first, then began building a design and fabric scheme around the color palette. I wanted the room to be soft and feminine, but have a bit of an “edge” at the same time, so I juxtaposed soft fabrics and faux fur with sleek elements like brass, lacquer and lucite.

What’s your favorite design element in the room?
I’m very much in love with the vanity area in the room. Everything about it speaks to my personal aesthetic—the colorful modern art, the lucite console, the burl wood bench, and especially the quirky little makeup brush holder.

How did you do the treatment on the walls? It’s such a fun matte vs. glossy look!
The pattern on the walls is a tone-on-tone wall treatment done by Bella Tucker. Owner Dana Tucker approached me with a Queen of Spain inspired wall stencil and I knew it would be perfect for the walls in this room. The base paint is Sherwin Williams Malted Milk interior flat, and then Brooks Tucker stenciled over it with the same color in a gloss finish. (You can view a video of the process on their blog!) It's such an easy way to add interest to a room without going overboard… anyone can do it!

Can you tell us a bit about the curtains and pillows?
The marble euros and drapes are custom and made from Kravet Couture Visionary fabric in the Pearl colorway. The lumbar pillow is Groundworks Feline fabric in Graphite Rose. Pillows were made by Little Design Company and drapes were made at a local workroom.

What about your favorite memory working on the project?
I really enjoyed assisting Brooks Tucker of Bella Tucker Finishes as he painted the tone-on-tone pattern on the walls. He is a master of his craft so it was a real treat to see him in action. Aside from that, painting all the artwork for the room was certainly a highlight because, ultimately, it’s what I love to do!
