Meet Derek Overfield, Minted + Domino’s Featured Monthly Artist!

Figurative art has always been a major point of inspiration in Derek Overfield's life. For as long as he can remember, Overfield has been immersed in the dynamic figures of comic book art, learning what he calls "the unique language of the body." At Fairmont State, he studied art history under the guidance of acclaimed painter Lynn Boggess, eventually going on to hold a degree in Fine Arts. In the years since, Derek has cultivated the love of the figure and powerful expression that Boggess encouraged, taking admiration for figure drawing with an expressive approach to making art that feels both contemporary and ancient - minimal, yet compelling. Here, he touches on his inspirations and the freedom of expression that comes with being an artist. Take a look!

Where do you feel most inspired?
My wife and I share a studio, but inspiration bubbles up over time. Sitting in traffic, reading, at any time these themes can come forth and determine what I want to focus on next.

How would you describe your personal style?
My art is bold, expressive, and with a hint of the heroic and tragic. At home, we like a mixture of traditional and modern, but minimal and clean.

What makes a home beautiful?
Character. I enjoy when the original qualities of a home are embraced or highlighted.

What do you love most about being an artist?
Freedom of expression, embracing the accidental, and making a lasting image out of immediacy.

What is your most prized possession?
I probably have a lot of these, as I tend to be sentimental. I'd say any number of the things my dad made for me as a child. Whatever my imagination dreamed up, he'd make for me.

On what items do you scrimp?
One thing I can point to is that I've never been the type to want a brand new car. As long as it's reliable, I'm good!

On what items do you splurge?
My wife and I love to travel to visit art museums.
