Lounge Sofa is inspired by a visit to a tailor shop. Not just any shop though, the designers grandfathers favourite one. Rui Alves has a clear image in his head of the shop, the craftsmen working, the old wooden hangers that held all the grey suits and coats. Everything in the room was handmade and the only mechanical items were two old sewing machines that slowly ran and sounded almost like clockwork. The Portuguese designer comes from a family of skilled craftsmen. Both his father and grandfather were cabinetmakers and he grew up surrounded by wood and tools. Still today observing old craftsmen work is his main source of inspiration, I admire their knowledge and respect for the materials and often visit the traditional and old shops that are still around. The visual reference to the tailor shop is clear in his beautiful Lounge sofa, from the ash wood and the grey fabric to his enormous attention to detail. The sofa has a light and airy appearance and all the details are carefully thought through. The structure is made of ash wood and holds a foam shell covered with soft 100% wool fabric. The detail in the wood and the upholstery gives it a handmade look and all the wood joints are carefully designed to follow the round shape of the sofa. Rui Alves explains, I wanted to show all of it, the structure, the fittings, the beautiful ash wood. It should not be hidden like normally done in sofa design. Theentire sofa is carefully thought through and it is meant to be seen from all sides.
