Mel Gibson’s seriously stunning 5.5-acre estate just went on the market, and while the $17.5 million price tag isn’t exactly affordable, the home is full of design elements we’d love to pull out and recreate on our own—and on our own budgets.

Described as “Old World,” Gibson’s residence is visibly inspired by history and religion. According to Trulia, the decor is influenced by the actor-turned-director’s Catholic upbringing and personal interest in history. Religious icons and crosses are scattered around the house, and custom, stunning iron light fixtures and stand-alone bathtubs lend a definite “Old World” charm.

Intricate wooden accents run throughout the home, and dark, hardwood floors create a unified feel. This is balanced out by exposed wood beams and intricate wood furniture pieces, like gorgeous bookcases.

While wood definitely seems to be the main material used, the stonework is equally impressive. Inside, stone archways add interest to the rooms, while the exterior stone walls add a natural element.

Speaking of the exterior, the best parts of the 6,587-square-foot property are all outside. In addition to Malibu ocean views, there are two pools—one is a lap pool, the other is located next to a hot tub for a spa-like experience—a private sun deck, and a separate pool house/gym. Surrounded by greenery, Gibson’s secluded old estate is gated, and provides all the privacy required by an A-lister.

Also outside? A detached guest house that offers extra living space, in addition to the five-bedroom, five-bathroom main house.

The actor purchased the home in 2008 for $11.5 million, from then-couple David Duchovny and Tea Leoni. Situated in the middle of all Malibu and nearby Santa Monica have to offer, the location can’t be beat. Britt Elizondo of Compass holds the listing.

“This estate is by far the most magical property I have ever experienced,” says Elizondo. We would be inclined to agree.
