Calling all entertaining enthusiasts: There’s a new dinnerware collection out today worth paying attention to. Jenni Kayne, the fashion designer making waves in the home decor industry with her inaugural collection and flagship NYC boutique, has just launched a  tabletop line for the spring. And, true to Kayne’s signature aesthetic, the simple and timeless design is a minimalist’s dream.

This is Kayne’s first-ever collection specifically focused on the table, and the attention to detail is evident in each piece. The materials are the main draw, with earthy ceramics, tanned leather accents, and rich linens all featuring prominently. Ranging in price from $21 to $285, the line exudes classic elegance. Kayne’s spring tabletop line is a result of the designer’s love for home entertaining, something we first got a glimpse of at her boutique in November 2017. According to Kayne, fans of that limited-edition offering can expect the same thing from the spring launch.

“I really believe in having a cohesive sense of style across all areas of life, so my approach to designing a retail space is actually quite similar to that of a single ceramic piece,” she explains. “When I focus on the elements of design I truly love—natural fibers and textures, clean, minimal lines, and the beautiful simplicity of everyday objects—consistency and authenticity come through, naturally.”

Kayne designed the ceramic dinnerware in partnership with LA artist Victoria Morris, but the aesthetic is still very much reflective of the simple luxury that Kayne’s brand is known for. We spoke to the designer to learn about what goes into designing a tabletop line—plus, get her top tips for entertaining.

What was your style inspiration for the collection?

My style can be described as warm, minimal, simple, and elegant. That spans all of my collections; with everything I design, I really am focused on making everyday items a little more special. I love to cook and entertain family and friends all year round, and I wanted to design my own line of tableware that would be versatile enough for every occasion. I love a neutral palette because they keep things classic and clean, and they’re great to mix and match.

How did you choose the materials you wanted to use?

Our dinnerware pieces were designed in partnership with Victoria Morris, one of my favorite ceramicists. I knew I wanted my tableware to feel both organic and sophisticated. The vases are glass in varying sizes and wrapped in natural vegetable-tanned leather with accents of antique brass. I love leather that develops a patina over time—it really makes a piece so much more special when it grows and changes alongside you. Linen was a great choice for the tablecloths and napkins—it’s subtly textured, super soft, and organically fits in [with] any table’s setting.

Is designing tableware always something you were interested in?

I’ve always loved cooking and entertaining, and I’m always featuring recipes and table settings on my blog, Rip & Tan. Tableware was a natural next step.

How do you approach entertaining?

I like to have a candle burning as my guests arrive—a warm, inviting scent that really sets the mood. I try to plan and prep as much as I can before my guests arrive so that I don’t have any last-minute surprises. Even in the most formal settings, I think a host's attitude should be as laid-back as possible, because once the party’s over, all that really matters is that you were able to enjoy yourself and the company of the people you love.

What makes a good tablescape? Do you have a go-to look or tips for a design that’s easy to do but wows?

I like to mix, match, and play with height and texture to create a beautiful, but effortlessly put together table. I always incorporate seasonal arrangements of flowers and foliage to complement the meal, which is most often organic, seasonal, and locally sourced. Having a little takeaway gift at every place setting always goes over well too—it’s those little touches that will really make your guests feel well taken care of.

What’s your number one entertaining philosophy?

I really believe in being mindful about what you bring into your home and limiting your consumption to the objects you really, truly love. When you slow down and start paying attention to details, taking stock of the choices you make, it’ll start to influence other areas of your life. Editing things down to your most-loved essentials makes room for bigger, more important things, like showing gratitude to the people you love.
