It's safe to say that we have a longstanding obsession with Danish design studio HAY. Aside from their constantly evolving style, which embodies an aesthetic that exudes effortless elegance, the purveyor of inspired Scandinavian furnishings and accessories never fails to please when it comes to their fresh interpretations of common household essentials. Proving that form and function can, in fact, coexist, HAY's unwavering commitment to reinventing the ordinary with style, simplicity, and an adherence to color provides a much-needed source of a new perspective.
Late last year, HAY and Ikea launched a highly-coveted collaboration—a first of the sort for the Swedish retailer, who went as far as to allow the husband-wife-duo behind the brand to put their iconic spin on an Ikea classic: the Frakta tote. This year, they're back at it again, with yet another unprecedented partnership that is about to change music, of all things. Well, the way you listen to it anyway.
Earlier today, HAY and Sonos unveiled a new line of limited edition Sonos One speakers, available in red, green, and yellow—hues comprised of a curated palette akin to the Danish brand's signature vision. "These speakers deserve to be treated like furniture; strong, independent objects that can blend in or stand out – functional accessories for any room that fit different needs and different spaces,” says Mette Hay, co-founder of HAY.
Luckily enough, the palette not only boasts the trending hues of the season, but they are versatile enough to fit in with any decorative scheme and yet dynamic enough to make a statement on their own.
For Sonos, whose strict adherence to designing speaker systems that can be seamlessly integrated into a home, the partnership was a no-brainer. “Our speakers aren’t designed to claim attention, they are designed [to] blend naturally into their surroundings,” said Tad Toulis, VP of Design at Sonos, in a statement in regards to Sonos’ product design philosophy.
Fostered by a mutual passion for designing items with modern living in mind, the collaboration between the two is a match made in design heaven.
While we'll have to wait until September 2018 to snag the HAY Sonos One ($229), it'll give us just enough time to settle on a preferred hue and decide just where we can sneak the oh-so-chic yet beautifully understated speaker in.
