If her real estate choices divulge anything, it’s that Gloria Steinem is a creature of habit. The author and feminist icon just purchased a third floor apartment in an Upper East Side building where she already owns the first and second floors. The 1910 brownstone, where Steinem has lived since 1966, is a spot with a lot of history attached. She launched Ms. magazine in her living room there in 1972, and counted Mary Ann Madden —otherwise known as the creator of New York Magazine’s puzzle page— as a neighbor. In fact, Steinem’s new apartment once belonged to Madden herself.

Steinem paid $1.1 million for the third floor walk-up (originally listed for $975,000), which she plans to convert into a guest suite. After the building became a co-op in the 1970s, Steinem turned her apartments on the first two floors into a duplex. The decor of her duplex is every bit as bohemian-chic as you would expect from the icon, who is known for her distinctive ‘70s personal style. As seen in this video tour that she conducted with Oprah, Steinem’s duplex is a colorful, eclectic space decked out with unique artwork and feminist mementos.

It’s safe to say that we can expect a similar decor style for her new place. The tall 16-foot ceilings and original parquet floors in the apartment, coupled with charming features like built-in bookshelves, working fireplaces, and crown molding on the windows, lend a real shabby-chic vibe to the space.

The one-bedroom apartment includes a small bathroom with black and white floor tiling and a white kitchen. While those rooms are relatively modest, the gorgeous foyer entrance and spacious living room add timeless elegance to the apartment.

The listing was held by William Raveis Real Estate.
