When you see ‘Hungarian thermal water’ in a product, grab it because it’s pretty much magical, for a few specific, geological reasons.
Steeped in a rich history of thermal water, Hungary can be considered a powerhouse for miraculous skin healing methods and ingredients.
First off, Hungary’s bath houses, still in working order today, originate as far back as the 5th century, and many of the ones standing today were built in the 1500s by the occupying Ottoman Turks. Then the Romans joined in on the bathing tradition after they colonized Hungary over 2,000 years ago.
But it’s the exact placement on the globe that makes Hungary so extraordinarily special. The fundamentals of physics is what plays into the magic here: The Alps come from the west, curving around Hungary, putting Budapest in a basin. Water flows down from the mountains into the basin, and it settles into the different layers of the earth, filtering the water as it sinks lower. As the water evaporates, the pressure pushes the water back to the surface, thus making it easily accessible and mineral rich.
So rich in fact that the water is the most mineral rich in the world. Those minerals in the water are already found in your body, (magnesium, calcium, sodium, etc.) so they naturally help the cells in your body function better, helping from everything your skin to your internal systems.
But there’s no plane ticket needed to gain the health benefits from the healing Hungarian waters. Read on for how a few brands have packaged up the water to go for your convenience.
Peter Thomas Roth
Roth loves Hungarian water so much that he actually bottled the water, and brought it back to his lab in New Jersey to mimic the components of the minerals. The result is his two-product Hungarian Thermal Water line. There is a rich history of natural healers in Hungary, too, so in addition to Hungarian waters, Roth also added in nine Hungary indigenous plants for added skin healing.
A good starter product in the line is the Hungarian Thermal Water Mineral-Rich Moisturizer ($58), which is meant to mimic that infamous “fountain of youth” by reducing the look of fine lines, wrinkles, dullness, uneven skin tone, and texture—leaving skin healthier and fresher-looking.
Korean beauty science meets Hungarian natural bounty with Belif's bestseller Hungarian Water Essence ($42), which recharges skin with a major moisture boost thanks to the mineral-rich water essence. Then the brand adds a blend of apothecary herbs, including rosemary and lavender, for an added addition of antioxidants and hydration. Skin is left softer, healthier-looking, and moisturized.
Founders Stephen and Margaret de Heinrich de Omorovicza began their journey literally in the famous thermal baths of Budapest, where Stephen’s family built the world-renounded Rácz spa in the 19th century. Amazed by the miraculous affect the mineral-rich spa waters had on their skin, the couple enlisted a Nobel Prize-winning dermatology lab to create their now patented Hydro Mineral Transference system, which delivers therapeutic minerals to the deepest layers of the skin for a plumper, younger-looking complexion.
One of their bestsellers is the Thermal Cleansing Balm ($110), which is a best-of Hungarian product list, including Hungarian Moor Mud (for purifying and nourishing skin with calcium and magnesium carbonates), their patented healing concentrate (for firmer, more supple skin) and sweet almond oil (replenishing and hydrating).
