You know what’s a much cooler alternative to the quintessential Venice Beach bike ride? Biking Downtown Los Angeles The neighborhood has had a renaissance over the past several years, thanks to a mix of historic renovations and fresh new developments, with many creative businesses at the center—like food markets, retail pop-ups, art galleries, and more.
To navigate the best of the best by bicycle, we turned to Juliana Rudell di Simone, owner of Tokyobike North America and chic cyclist extraordinaire, who maps out her must-see spots in and around Downtown.
“This was first known as the L.A. Terminal Market, built in the 1920s to accommodate produce distribution in the region. It has now been developed into restaurants, office spaces, and retail shops—and is home to Tokyobike Los Angeles. A+R, my favorite L.A. design shop, has just opened their 5,000 square-foot flagship store here, and Hayato is opening an intimate Japanese restaurant in a few weeks two storefronts down from us. There’s also Poketo, Tartine, PCP and the Smorgasburg L.A.—a must every Sunday.”
“The owners Chase and Tami have created a special place for bicycles, bicycle service, and one of the best coffees in the area.”
“It’s hard to get a reservation here, so I usually show up at 5 p.m. when they first open and sit at the bar. The Burrata Pizza, Lobster Crostino, and Marrow Bone are to die for.”
“Hands down, the best wine shop in Los Angeles.”
Hauser & Wirth
“This space is grand and stunning—one that I can spend the whole day just wandering around.”
“Alchemy Works is on 3rd Street, the heart of the Arts District. And Lindsay and Raan Parton have done an amazing job with the curation and design of this gallery and retail space.”
“Even if you are not hungry, this is worth a visit. Probably the best steamed buns I have ever had.”
“The dishes here are unexpected and thoughtful. My go-tos are the tortillas with refried beans, the mushrooms, and the stuffed squid.”
