You hemmed and hawed over your cabinet hardware. You looked at every slab of countertop there was at the stone yard. You even laid out your new floor boards by hand. By the time you’re ready to pick fresh appliances for your kitchen renovation, the last thing you want is to settle for an ugly range that puts a damper on all your hard design work.

Luckily, going with a good-looking range doesn’t mean you have to compromise on quality. We recently asked 15 designers: What do you think is the best-designed kitchen range out there? We were surprised to find a whole—for lack of a better word—range of options out there. Sure, they still adore snazzy French brands like Lacanche and La Cornue, but there are plenty of others they’ve used on projects, too. Here’s what they had to say.

I’m an interior designer, but I am also a serious cook. For me, it’s got to be Thermador’s 48″ gas range. The feature that sold me on the Thermador is how great it is at a low simmer. You can put a paper plate on it with chocolate chips, and the flame will melt the chocolate without burning the paper. It also has a little click that will go off every few minutes so you don’t leave that low flame on accidentally. —Tara Lenney, founder of Tara Lenney Design
