With 40 vendors showcasing an array of cuisines and cocktails, the eagerly-anticipated DeKalb Market Hall opened this weekend at City Point in Downtown Brooklyn (already home to the luxurious Alamo Drafthouse movie theater and Target). The food emporium plays host to the first outpost of famed Lower East Side deli Katz’s, Vietnamese hole-in-the-wall Bunker and the Arepa Lady from Jackson Heights Queens.

And there’s more—this summer, grab Steve’s Key Lime pies on a stick, fried chicken from Carroll Gardens southern favorite Wilma Jean, ribs from Fletcher’s Brooklyn Barbecue and sundaes from Brooklyn favorite Ample Hills Creamery on the go.

The 33,000-square-foot space includes a 7,500-square-foot event room with a 40-foot long bar and test kitchen conceived by Foragers founder Anna Castellani. “Paul Travis, the development partner in the project, and I discussed a food hall concept for the site 10 years ago,” says Castellani. “He was looking for something different, and I think we got that.”

The visionary businesswomen asked her team at Foragers for names of their favorite vendors and started from there getting expert suggestions. She wanted unique and passionate operators to be involved, and so she and her team did a lot of door-to-door introductions and food tastings.

“Each vendor had a great deal of creative license,” she explains of her desire to make it different from a traditional food court space. “We just gave them their spot on the floor and hope the space fills in and develops over time to become eclectic and surprising for its visitors.”
