Urban Outfitters’s best-selling product is not a macramé wall hanging straight out of a bohemian dream. It’s not a multicolored tapestry. It’s not even a rattan armchair. It’s an upholstered platform bed, according to a UO spokesperson. The color? Light beige. The silhouette? Clean. For die-hard fans of the brand’s signature layered, globally inspired aesthetic, the pick might come as a bit of a surprise—but let’s unpack it.

The bed boasts an average four-star rating, with most of the reviews centering on how easy it is to assemble. We’d guess its simplicity is the key to its success; we might be totally entranced by a wraparound velvet frame or a galactic-esque headboard…but when it comes down to it, we often just need a foundation that’s ultra-versatile. And at $600, it’s a steal.

With timeless pinewood legs and linen upholstery, UO’s Riley Platform Bed is basic in the best way; it won’t distract from whatever funky bedspread you choose to drape over it. To prove this, we’ve styled the best-seller three different ways. Which one is your favorite?

The High-Contrast Combo

When in doubt, go the primary color route. Since this frame is so accommodating, you can liberally layer on the boldest hues—think: Yves Klein Blue, marigold yellow, tomato red. Black-and-white grid bedding ties them all together, playing off the geometric stripes in the Aelfie rug.

The Calming Haven

If you bought the bed for its straightforward style, why compromise your vision? Stick with neutrals, but mix in a range of materials and fabrics to make them pop. Ferm Living’s travertine side table and a wood shelf are the perfect spots to house your bevy of palo santo and essential oils, and we definitely think it’s worth sacrificing an all-white space for Sarah Sherman Samuel’s ochre-striped rug. Don’t panic: It’s still suitably minimal.

The Retro Revival

Offset the headboard’s classic lines with some good old-fashioned Memphis-inspired design. Go ahead and splurge on a handcrafted cloud-shaped side table or Ettore Sottsass lamp (you saved on the bed!). For the other accents, look to abstract shapes and funky patterns to liven things. Dusen Dusen’s squiggly sheets may be monochrome, but they’re anything but boring.
