The only personal residence designed by internationally renowned architect Clive Wilkinson sold last month to Tobey Maguire. The West Hollywood residence, which happened to be his own and was dubbed the “Club Clive” by his friends, was purchased by the Spider-Man actor for $3.375 million; substantially more than the $690,000 Wilkinson originally spent in 2003 for the property.
However, given the impeccably designed space, the increase in price is definitely warranted. Wilkinson, who is best known for designing Googleplex (AKA Google headquarters) in 2005, infused his contemporary style and dramatically renovated the place to create a home that blended the indoors with the outdoors.
After removing the walls and replacing them with glass doors, Wilkinson moved on to incorporating an open-space plan through free-flowing design and high ceilings. The 20-foot tall kitchen, dining room, and living room open directly to the 48-foot saltwater pool and patio area. The master suite is also connected to the private courtyard, creating a distinctly California-cool vibe with a relaxed design and blue-tiled shower that opens up to the pool.
“It was a big change in my thinking to not put the master on the second story to maximize views,” Wilkinson told the LA Times in 2016. “It was a lesson in Palm Springs living, to place it at the level of the pool, to shut out the outside world.”
The 3,300-square-foot property also features two other bedroom suites and a lounge/library area upstairs, connected to the first floor by a steel cable railing staircase. Throughout the house, Wilkinson’s modern approach to design is evident with a simple yet vibrant color scheme, wide-plank sawn oak and smooth concrete floors, and exposed beam ceilings juxtaposed with clean white walls. There are also eight skylights illuminating the home, creating the ultimate sunny and serene oasis that we’re sure drew Maguire in (if not that, then maybe the gate and olive tree courtyard that guarantee privacy?).
“The residence is a very special property not only for the fact it was designed and built by a world-class, award winning architect—this is the obvious,” says Eric Lavey of the Agency, one of the listing agents for the home. “Most impressive is something that can be difficult to achieve in West Hollywood: Extreme volume, light, and ultimate privacy in a very tasteful and timeless contemporary package, while being only steps to the epicenter of the heart of West Hollywood.”
Wilkinson, who launched his design firm in 1991, has mastered the art of modern design and is known for pushing the envelope with his creations. Most recently, he created an open-plan office for Microsoft and is reportedly focusing his attention on designing a new residence for his family. If Maguire’s new place is any indication, we’re sure the new space will be just as gorgeous.
