The women-only social club The Wing isn’t just another coworking space. The interiors of the original Flatiron space look like you want your own home to look—all millennial pink and mid-century lines—and that’s the point. With a 3,000-person waiting list, it’s clearly been a coveted space, and now, founders Audrey Gelman and Lauren Kassan are expanding their girl power vision.
They’ll be opening three new spaces: Two more in New York, in Soho and Downtown Brooklyn, which will open by the end of the year, and one in Washington, D.C. Plus, they expanded the original space this summer with a new rooftop paradise. It’s the perfect al fresco office, with wifi for work and beach vibes for morning yoga, not to mention sunset cocktails.
With Frosé the Riveter, an aptly named frozen rosé available at the cafe downstairs, and a speaker system blasting The Wing women’s summer favorite SZA, The Wing’s roof is the place to spend what’s left of summer. Plus with chic decor moments, you’ll want to take some pointers and bring these vibes home.
We chatted with Chiara de Rege and Hilary Koyfman of CdR & Co, the interiors team behind The Wing, about the summery new addition to the beloved New York haven.
What was the inspiration for the space?
We decided it should be more true to downstairs, but just a little more beachy—almost like if you were to escape to the beach from the city for a day.
Can you talk through the furniture and decor choices you made in creating the rooftop space? What are some key pieces?
We had budget and a very, very short lead time in mind. I knew that if we got basic catalogue pieces, we would bring them to life with Kate Loudoun Shand’s beautiful fabrics. So I worked directly with Kate on a bold fabric story that would brighten the space and be fun, chic, and happy, and also true to our interiors downstairs.
How did you play off of the initial space? How do the two spaces speak to one another?
The fabrics are similar to our pillow fabrics in the initial space. And the furniture has similar clean mid-century lines. In addition, the initial space is a balance of work in private areas juxtaposed to more social areas. We tried to create private nooks on the roof while also allowing for programming flexibility and a more social atmosphere where members can go up and chat and relax.
How do you create the perfect rooftop?
The perfect rooftop should consider comfortable lounge like furniture and seating with shaded areas (I love the covered rattan Pier One swivel chairs we sourced and the Ballard Designs blue and white stripe awnings). I wanted to make sure people had options to sit at dining-height tables or just sit back and enjoy a comfy chair to read in.
Flexibility with seating is important, too. It gives members a chance to enjoy programming with lots of other members but also intimate moments with real conversation or just quiet time to escape. It’s nice to create a space that allows for crowds as well as intimacy.
