Target, the rare big box retailer with a cult following, never fails to please when it comes to, well, just about everything. Whether you’re on the hunt for something affordable, trendy, or just browsing one of their (many) exclusive collaborations, it seems as if we’re always looking for one excuse or another to pop in. Naturally, with any new season, comes a fresh slew of collections—Target’s forthcoming one being no exception.

“We’re introducing more than a dozen new brands over the next 18 months,” says Mark Tritton, Target’s chief merchandising officer, Project 62 being one we’re personally excited for.As an ode to the year in which Target was founded, project 62reflects the peak of the midcentury modern movement, according to Tritton. Geared towards urban dwellers with small-space living in mind, the collection boasts no shortage of inspired (and affordable!) designs. The collection includes more than 1,200 pieces, ranging in price from $2.99 to $699.99, and it will be available to shop in Target stores and on Target.com starting September 19.

We caught up with Tritton to get the exclusive scoop on Project 62.

What was the inspiration behind Project 62?

We spend a lot of time with our guests, and one thing we discovered was that our home assortment was a bit too one-dimensional. It wasn’t addressing the multiple styles our guests are shopping for. So, over the next 18 months, we’re adding distinct new aesthetics to our portfolio, starting with Project 62—an approachable modern home brand designed for everyday life.

When it comes to the inspiration behind the collection, our design team focused on urban living solutions and the mid-century modern aesthetic with a nod to Scandinavian influence.

Can you give us an idea of the sort of pieces we can expect from the line?

Guests can expect to see modern furniture, decor, and soft goods that are perfect for small-space living. The collection was created with an urban mindset, designed to solve for the many challenges of small-space living and the need for mobility that comes from frequent moves. There is a focus on efficiency, simplification, and highly functional yet stylish, modern pieces at an affordable price point.

Project 62 mixes patterns, fabrics, and colors, using high quality and durable materials like marble, wood, brushed metal, and acrylic, to offer guests a stylish variety of products to incorporate within their current home décor.

Is there a piece that you are particularly fond of or excited about?

I love the entire collection—the team did a great job designing a stylish assortment that is perfect for urban living, and the price point is incredible. The Peoria Wood Arm Chair is one of my personal favorites, though. The midcentury silhouette coupled with the black leather is a beautiful combination that I think our guests will love. At $169.99, it’s an outstanding value.
