Christmas fanatics know: There’s an unwritten rule when it comes to ornament selection. Usually, the smaller orbs pepper the tree’s branches, while extra-large ones are more fit for a mantel, tabletop, or outdoor display. Well, Shay Mitchell just turned tradition on its head.
While Mitchell was traveling, her good friend and interior stylist Chad Wood snuck into the actor’s Los Angeles home and Christmas-fied it, most notably setting up two gigantic, shimmering trees with oversize ruby red and champagne-hued decorations. Mitchell’s tree taught us that when it comes to jumbo ornaments, less is more. Wood left much more space in between each planet-esque ornament than you would with smaller pieces, so the tree doesn’t feel too cluttered. He then filled in the empty spaces with other trimmings: twinkling white lights, holly berries, and ribbon.
If you want to try the style on your own tree, opt for ornaments that are 4 inches or larger for the wow-worthy effect. And if you have leftovers, there’s no need to ditch tradition entirely—you can always use extras as a centerpiece or on your staircase, like Mitchell’s. Bonus: When the holidays are over, they make great mini disco balls for dance parties.
