How it started: In the morning, I’d run to my nearby coffee shop for a large cold brew in a plastic to-go cup. Or I’d buy a $12 bottle of cold brew concentrate, which was convenient, sure, but would only last me about a week or less. In other words, things got expensive (and wasteful) fast.
How it’s going: I’m now a total devotee to the Oxo Compact Cold Brew Coffee Maker, an at-home brewer that saves me from expensive barista-made caffeine, is low-waste, and costs just $30 plus the price of beans.
It’s also super-simple to use. First, I coarsely grind my beans so they’re the texture of breadcrumbs (Stumptown Hair Bender is my fave; Stone Street Coffee Cold Brew Reserve is a close second and already comes ground) and add them to the brewer all the way up the fill line. Then I add the Rainmaker lid and pour 24 ounces of water (the glass carafe helps you measure it) over the top. Next it goes in my fridge for 18 to 24 hours, though you can leave it on the countertop, too.
The next day I place the brewer on top of the carafe, and here’s the fun part: It drains the concentrate into the chic glass bottle, where it hangs out in the fridge until I’m ready for my morning iced coffee. Then I compost the grounds and rinse out the brewer for next time. And because you need to dilute the concentrate (I go with about half water, half concentrate), the liquid lasts just as long as my previously beloved store-bought bottles of cold brew. Not that I’d ever buy one again.
