So you’ve waited until the week before Father’s Day to start brainstorming gift ideas for dad… Again. You could settle for a simple, sentimental card (like you did last year), or you could pick up an impressive gift he won’t soon forget. Hello, favorite child status. We tapped Nate Berkus, interior designer extraordinaire, for last-minute gift ideas that will have dad convinced you’ve been planning for months. Keep reading for his favorite products from his eponymous line of home goods sold at Target and more ideas that dad will love.
Let’s start with Berkus’ favorite products from his line, all perfect additions to a study or bedroom.
nate berkus equestrian side table in brown; $89.99, target.com
This side table is so good, we bet dad would understand if you picked up one for yourself, too. Berkus said, “I love the combination of leather and brass. It makes them feel appropriately masculine.”
nate berkus ceramic agave figural; $14.99, target.com
Chances are, your dad’s #shelfies might need a bit of help. This ceramic agave figural is modern, neutral, and also interesting enough to share a bookshelf (or desk space) with your dad’s collection of books and trinkets.
nate berkus embroidered mirror in tan/black; $39.99, target.com
If you know your dad isn’t an art guy, this mirror is a great compromise in an attempt to fill that empty wall space. Feeling ambitious? Start crafting him his own
Berkus told Target, “I especially like the idea of its more global look paired with a mix of classic black and gilded frames.”
nate berkus longstrand woven throw; $49.99, target.com
Though your first inclination might not be to get dad a new throw, he’ll definitely appreciate it. Berkus said, “It feels luxe, and is perfect to have on hand on cool summer nights.”
a watch (or new band!)
Confirmed: Dads love watches. “What man doesn’t love a watch? If not a new watch, why not get a new watch band in a great color to totally refresh his look,” said Berkus.
a fresh pair of shoes
Up your dad’s summer shoe game with a new pair of shoes. Berkus’ favorites are Jibs—in navy, natch.
treat him to a nice dinner
Treat your dad to his favorite meal or restaurant. Berkus’ spot of choice: The Palm. He said, “It makes for a great night out, and is always a treat.”
back to the basics
Berkus recommended buying dad pocket tees from Club Monaco in black, grey, AND navy, adding “You can never go wrong with stocking his wardrobe with go-to basics.”
a weekend away
Surprise your dad with a weekend getaway! Or if he’s not the “surprise” type, suggest a destination and plan the trip together. Berkus said, “My husband and I did a fun trip with our daughter to Palm Springs recently. It was a quick drive from L.A. and we had such a blast for the 48 hours we were there. You don’t need to go far, just pick somewhere you know he likes. Or an activity he loves.”
(P.S. We love Palm Springs, too.)
cologne
Specifically, HERMÈS Un Jardin Sur Le Toit Cologne ($194, usa.hermes.com). Berkus said, “It’s such a unique scent, whether to wear every day or for a special occasion.”
a pair of sunglasses
Berkus recommends Saint Laurent sunglasses, but any pair in your price range should do the trick. Better yet, “Take dad shopping and have him pick out his favorite pair,” suggested Berkus.
