When it comes to holiday decorating, Shea McGee throws out the rule book. The designer and her family have officially transitioned into Christmas mode by the looks of her latest Instagram post, and we did a double take when we saw their tree, perfectly trimmed with white and gold ornaments, and realized there’s no skirt in sight.

Instead of encircling the trunk and stand with a piece of fabric (which, let’s be honest, can often skew tacky), McGee contained the whole thing in a basket. The designer revealed in the comments that this extra-large one, handwoven out of willow, is from Ballard Designs. For her second (and smaller) tree upstairs, she used one of her own McGee & Co. designs, which has handles for easy maneuvering.

Besides the fact that these clever collars look much more natural underneath the branches, they also stay tidy with no effort; you no longer have to stress over the skirt slipping and sliding around every time you walk by or vacuum near it. And if you opt to repurpose a standard bin with a bottom, you can use it to store other things year-round. Round or oval; rope or wicker—there’s plenty of cheer here:
