Light the fire and get the kettle going: Our winter issue is here! In the spirit of combating cold, dark winter days, this season’s pages are a celebration of all things cozy and colorful. And, who better to set the stage for an inspiring, fireside read than Refinery29 co-founder, global editor in chief, and all-around-leading-lady, Christene Barberich?

Our cover star’s bold Brooklyn nursery paves the way for a brighter winter. In the process of creating the ultimate cozy nest for her newborn daughter, Barberich infused her own fiercely unique sense of style.

“It’s true, nothing about this room screams typical nursery—in fact, if it weren’t for the sleek mini crib and bassinet, some colorful picture books, and a minimalist mobile, you might not realize that a baby resides here,” she says. “But she does. And no doubt, she’ll continue to make it her own as she grows up and makes our space feel more like a home than ever before.”

In the spirit of embracing the unexpected, elsewhere in the issue, you’ll find fresh takes on country getaways, secrets to better sleep, and alternative woven textures. Claire Thomas of Sweet Laurel Bakery takes us inside her tricked-out Big Bear cabin, while Yana Volfson, beverage director at New York City’s white-hot Cosme and Alta restaurants, schools us on the art of mezcal.

“We are imbibing the spirit of a plant that was alive for 30 years!” shares Volfson, a self-professed mezcal whisperer. “It can take the place of champagne, of wine, of vermouth… and be paired with foods like cheese, meats, and cured fish.”

We’ll be toasting to 2019 with this delicious sip in hand.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a winter issue with gifting—and this year, we left the present talk to the pros. Jonathan Adler, Sarah Sherman Samuel, and our every own EIC, Jessica Romm Perez, are among the many inspiring individuals we asked to share their go-to holiday picks.

Full of surprises (and plenty of joy!), you’ll want to snag this year’s Winter Issue. Look for it on newsstands the first week of December!
