When you ask model and actor Brooke Shields how she creates a calming, sanctuary-like environment in her bathroom, she has two pieces of advice: First, lock the door. “Just yesterday my husband borrowed my Colgate,” says Shields, who recently partnered with the brand on its Gum Renewal toothpaste. So her second piece of advice? Buy multiples and stock them away for when family members “borrow” from your drawers.

Design plays a part in the zen, too. Shields prefers a chill palette of whites, grays, and blues, and she stays organized by dividing her medicine cabinet by product: Her cleansers, toners, and serums all have dedicated spots. Then she adds in these bathroom essentials, below.

Below Deck

Shields stores her travel-size toiletries and multiples in slim plastic containers that she stashes under the sink.

Glow On

“I always have candles in my bathroom, and usually one by the tub,” she says. “Diptyque’s are my favorite.”

Surf and Turf

In New York Shields is a big fluffy towel person, but at the beach she prefers a breezier, Turkish-style version.

Flower Power

At home, orchids are Shields’s bloom of choice. “I used to be afraid of them, because I thought I would kill them,” she says, but she has since figured out the secret to longevity. Instead of using a watering can, she puts an ice cube, which melts slowly, on top of the soil once a week.

Brush Up

As part of her nighttime routine, which starts around 11 p.m., Shields flosses and brushes with an all-in-one gadget that she keeps out on her countertop.
