There are two types of people in this world: those who DIY and those who don’t. The former actually enjoy blocking off a Saturday to crochet a wall hanging or transform an IKEA dresser into a modern masterpiece; the latter would rather just spend the day at the pool.

But even members of the second camp have to agree: A handful of DIY projects are so unique (and so easy to assemble!) that they’re worth a try. Case in point: this wavy translucent ice-blue bowl from Self-Assembly, a new company that encourages thoughtful consumption by providing easy step-by-step guides to hand-making common household items.

Only requires four supplies to put together? Check. Will be completed in 30 minutes? Check. Comes together like a cool high school science project? Check. Will look insanely cool on a kitchen counter? Absolutely.

Step 1: Lay Out Your Tools

To create this bowl, you’ll need Polydoh moldable plastic pellets with color granules, coated butcher paper (or a smooth, clean surface), a medium-size pot, and a pair of tongs. You’ll also need access to a stove, so kick your roommate out of the kitchen.

Step 2: Boil the Pellets

Place 25 ounces of plastic pellets in the pot along with 3 color granules of your choice (we used blue) and 30 white granules. Immerse the pellets in boiling water and let them hang out together until the pellets are clear.

Step 3: Blend Your Hue

Remove the softened plastic from the bowl with tongs (or spoons). Be very careful—the plastic will be hot and boiling water may squirt out. Knead the plastic like bread, by folding it on itself. Do this until the color is mixed thoroughly.

Step 4: Make a Ball

Push out any remaining air pockets and roll the plastic into a sphere. Place it back into the pot and immerse it in boiling water again. Second time’s the charm!

Step 5: Flatten It Out

After a few minutes, take the plastic out of the bowl with tongs and place it on coated butcher paper (or a very smooth surface). Flatten it out roughly to a 14-inch circle, as if you’re about to make some sugar cookies.

Step 6: Shape Your Bowl

Turn up the edges of the circle as the plastic starts to harden. Work fast as you pinch the sides upward—the plastic will harden within five minutes from the time you began flattening the sphere.

Step 7: Style It Up

Voilà! You now have a brand-new fruit bowl to display your favorite citrus or hold your aperitivo snacks. Best of all, you’ll have a great tale to tell when your guests ask you about your shapely blue vessel.
