Curb appeal counts. This, we know to be true: It’s the first impression that likely drew you to your house in the first place and it’s the first impression future guests have when they come by. It’s no surprise that a well-manicured lawn ranked as the number one priority for millennial home buyers. But what about the outdoor spaces that leave a little (or a lot) to be desired? Even for the keenest DIY’er, backyard renovations can be daunting.

It turns out that they can also be quite expensive. A new report from realtor.com dove into exactly how much a backyard renovation costs, citing data from HomeAdvisor. The average cost for redoing your outdoors is anywhere from $7,500 to $10,000. While the report concedes that this number will obviously fluctuate depending on your specific needs, the clear takeaway is that backyards are expensive.

However, this doesn’t mean that you should be relegated to living with an unsightly outdoor space until you’re ready to dip into your savings account. Small, routine housekeeping tasks, like being sure to weed and water properly, can, at the very least, keep your lawn looking tidy. And as for more decorative updates, try these stylish accents to tide you over while you save for your dream space.
