For a little extra inspiration, the Domino editors’ favorite Instagrammers takeover our feed each weekend. It’s safe to say tips and covetable images are aplenty. Here’s what you need to know about the most recent feature!
Last year, Domino (with the help of our very design-minded readers) scoured both the US and abroad to find the best, most creative, and trendsetting design blogs. Assembling a diverse group of talented bloggers with a passion for interiors—and everything from small spaces to DIY— we launched our inaugural Domino Design Blog Awards and highlighted a few lucky bloggers. This year we’re out to find some fresh talent (so be sure to make your submissions), but last year we happened upon Anita Yokota, a therapist-turned-designer who garnered some much-deserved recognition as our 2017 Best New Design Blog. In anticipation for this year’s awards, we peeked inside the California cool-meets-Scandinavian bohemian abode, where she gave us a first look into her living room, her daughters room, and her master bedroom. We’re certain you’ll be as big of a fan as Yokota as we are. You’re going to want to follow her refreshing design blog, ASAP.
One of the most common design mistakes is rushing into design. As Yokota points out, this living space took her months to thoughtfully curate. When redesigning or decorating a space, it can be tempting to jump in and buy everything at once, or worse, buy everything from the same place. There’s something to be said about taking the time to sort out what you have, what you still need, and where you want to search for those new items, and slowly making those purchases to complete your space. (Side note: That leather sofa is what dreams are made of.)
The most important takeaway from Anita’s daughters’ room is that you can absolutely rock a lavender room at any age. In fact, lavender makes for a seriously cool color combo when paired with deeper earth tones like ochre and a moodier shade of purple (like this Prince-inspired shade highlighted by Pantone). We’re also loving the many modern and boho accents that make this
whimsical, yet still polished and grown-up.
Have you ever seen a more zen bedroom? We especially love the way Yokota kept the walls super minimal, giving the space room to breathe. Layering the rugs (over wall-to-wall carpet!) is another touch that adds warmth and makes the room feel like an inviting oasis.
