If you’ve been seeing a lot of shells, shades of pink, and travertine marble on Instagram lately, you might want to thank Abby Campbell of Abigail Bell Vintage. The Instagram-based vintage seller found her niche in the antiques biz: She’s got a knack for spotting the retro trends that every design lover in Brooklyn (and beyond) is bound to love.
Campbell started her shop at just 18 years old—though at the time its inventory was composed of vintage clothing and handbags. After falling in love with home decor in college and spending a few years working for One Kings Lane, she revived Abigail Bell Vintage, but with a newfound focus. She wanted to sell furniture and decor to the Instagram crowd.
Pretty much everything Campbell sources feels primed for the picture-perfect photo. On Instagram, she can get a sense of the vintage finds her customers love and, in turn, predict the kinds of things they don’t yet know they want. So we asked her to predict the five vintage finds she thinks will be everywhere in six months. Time to hit the thrift store.
Plaster Lamps
“I’ve seen tons of these Floridian motel-chic plaster lamps. Some of them look like they’re draped fabric and some are twisted, chunky floor lamps. I always gravitate toward those, and I’m starting to think that it might be time for them to have a moment.”
Illuminated Furniture
“One thing I’ve been coming across while sourcing is prelit furniture pieces, like laminate hutches with recessed lighting. There are even full-on bedroom sets. Prelit pedestals are also really cool and an easily accessible way to incorporate that trend.”
Glass Bricks
“I am obsessed with ’80s glass block walls. [Editor’s note: So are we.] I found a vase with them the other week, and I was a little nervous about it. I didn’t know how people were going to respond, but they were super into it. I also found a table that had a base made of glass bricks.”
Space-Age Lamps
“I’m on the hunt right now for space-age-y lighting, especially sconces, that evoke the Memphis era. It’s easy to transition them into your home without going full-on Memphis, and they’re not too hard to find.”
Frosted Glass
“I found myself gravitating toward frosted glass‚ like pale pink vases, little dishes, or lamps. It’s cool being able to mix in some authentic Art Deco frosted glass from the ’20s and ’30s. You can go to a thrift store and find it. Lately we’ve been so ceramic heavy, so it’s fun to play with a new material.”
