When I ventured to Waco, Texas for the KILZ Master Class hosted by HGTV’s Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines, paint—specifically, Magnolia Home paint—was top of mind. There was a lot I wanted to know (like would they ever leave Waco? How do they pull off such amazing renovations in such a short time?), but paint took priority. Keep reading to learn all about their paint preferences!
What’s your favorite color from the line?
Chip: I’m all about our animals, so I’m going to go with One Horn White, which is named for our matron goat.
Joanna: It’s impossible to pick a favorite paint color! Lately, I’ve been really drawn to fresh botanical shades, like Magnolia Green.

And your favorite way to use it?
Chip: That’s Jo’s department! It’s a little warmer white though, so I’ll say a living room or more active family space.
Joanna: I think it would be fun choice for kitchen cabinets, or anywhere that needs a touch of nature.
Are you a fan of an accent wall—or painting a whole room?
Chip: I’m an all or nothing guy, so I would paint the whole room.
Joanna: I would paint the entire room. When I create an accent wall, I lean towards using textured materials like reclaimed wood, shiplap or tile.
Neutral or bold?
Chip: I prefer to keep things simple so, neutral.
Joanna: Neutral, though I love a bold black accent.
What’s your go-to finish?
Chip: I like an eggshell or satin finish, which is easier to scrub after I mark the wall up or splash it with something.
Joanna: I like a more matte, muted finish.
