how do you discover emerging design trends? are there certain aspects of design, etc that give clues?
I discover design trends mainly from my travels abroad and my own visceral reactions to fashion trends. I find that trends are usually recreations of design trends from other eras. Visiting showrooms and consistently resourcing design concepts allows me to pick up on trends.
of the trends you mention here, which one is a personal favorite that you might try at home?
Right now I'm very attracted to pastels, especially blush and nude tones. I would try mixing pastels with brass accents.
what is one design mistake that everyone needs to stop making, asap?
One mistake I see consistently is too much of the same exact style all over a room. It is just too much! Mix up your room with some contrasting styles (i.e throw in a few vintage pieces with your contemporary room for an eclectic flair).
what is the best piece of design advice you've ever received?
Make sure your paint samples and fabrics are tested in the exact room you are planning to use them, as the light in specific locations can play a big part in how color is perceived.
go big or go home
My biggest pet peeve is walking into someone’s home and seeing furniture that does not envelop and fill the room. The seating is so small in comparison to the room that the furniture looks so unimportant and uninviting. I love long sofas that create a sense of drama. I have even installed sofas in my client’s home that almost go wall to wall! If you have very high ceilings (above 9 feet), you really need to make sure your furnishings are tall enough to get some attention!
Today, we all know that fashionable and chic women would all agree that your shoes and purse definitely do NOT have to match! It’s the same concept when designing a room. In designing your home, most would think that all metal finishes must match in a room. If they have nickel door hardware, they are confined to do that same finish everywhere in the room. That is so untrue! This rule needs to be thrown in the garbage! The most interesting rooms are created by breaking these rules and mixing oppositional elements that play off each other in the most exciting way. Take a chance--use a brass chandelier even if you have chrome or nickel side tables! Copper is hot right now! Mix copper metals with blackened steel and brass. They can all work together if done tastefully. Anyone can go into a showroom and buy matching furniture with the same finish throughout. Step outside the box and try to coordinate by mixing different finishes in the room.
Fringe is in
From furnishings and home accessories, to clothing and handbags. Fringe is all the rage, and fashion and home designers can't fringe enough!
Pastels are back
It is juxtaposed this fall with the soft pastel and nude hues that are trending. Pastels have made a comeback and are trending, not just for the warm seasons, but the chilly ones as well. Monochromatic pastels mixed with touches of neutral camel tones are popping up everywhere this fall.
