There’s no shortage of food delivery services available on the market at the moment—from Postmates to UberEats, all of us have a favorite method of getting sushi delivered directly to our doorstep. (Walking to get takeaway is very 2016, evidently.) And thanks to a new partnership, prepare to add a familiar name to your roster of delivery services: Amazon.
The retail giant is teaming up with food ordering company Olo. Based in NYC, Olo lets customers order from 200 different restaurant brands, with over 40,000 locations across the US. The new service, dubbed “Amazon Restaurants,” would theoretically provide users access to these brands.
We say "theoretically" because, so far, the only brand to officially sign up for the new partnership is Buca di Beppo, an Italian eatery chain. However the potential for this is huge, as Olo also represents beloved fast food companies like Shake Shack, Chipotle, and Five Guys.
Here’s how Amazon Restaurants works: Olo’s recently-launched platform, Rails, makes it easy for restaurants to take delivery from third-party services, like Amazon. This means the operation would be split 50-50, with Olo covering the menu and ordering part, while Amazon takes care of the physical delivery.
“This is a big market for Amazon to get access to,” said Noah Glass, the CEO at Olo. “A big chunk of business is shifting to those who are good at this.”
This isn’t the first time Amazon has tried its hand at food delivery, though. In 2015, it launched a one-hour restaurant delivery service in its native city of Seattle. And as recently as summer 2017, the company started testing a meal kit delivery service.
So stay tuned: Your dream of acquiring a Shake Shack burger without having to put on shoes and leave your house may soon become a reality.
