Even for the non-conforming bride, knowing the hottest wedding trends du jour can’t hurt. Which is why virtual wedding marketplace WeddingWire’s predictions for the 2018 wedding trends are so exciting: We already know what to expect for next year’s wedding season. That means we can plan accordingly—and who doesn’t need something cheery to look forward to as we head into the cold, gray months?
To come up with the list, WeddingWire tapped leaders across the industry to lend their expertise and make predictions accordingly. And they didn’t disappoint, providing insight on what to expect in pretty much every area of wedding planning. The most surprising? A return to formality: While we love a more laid back and even unconventional wedding, Nora Sheils of Bridal Bliss Event Planning says the elegant, traditional ceremony is about to make a comeback.
“We are seeing cleaner florals, classic tuxedos, and a hint of sparkle,” said Shiels. And SQN Events’ Beth Bernstein agreed: “We’re seeing formal with a bit of whimsical, so it’s formal but not stuffy.”
In terms of color, it looks like cooler hues will be having a moment in 2018. Navy is replacing black—and being used as a neutral—as an alternative to the formal color. And instead of the ever-popular rose gold, experts predict bringing in more silver and chrome as the leading metallics. “Now that we’re seeing so much of the 1970’s influencing home decor lately, silver and chrome are making a comeback,” said Melissa McNeely, who owns Events by Melissa McNeely.
Other trendy ideas for decorations include hanging flowers—which you can then repurpose into gorgeous textiles for your home—over more minimalist-designed tables. And evidently, 2018 will be all about texture: “People want a lot of details, and are spending a lot on their guests’ experience. Different textures on various elements, such as wax seals on menus, assorted linens on each table, and even three different tabletops for the reception tables are some of the new ideas that guests will notice,” said Bernstein.
As for the decor idea leading next year’s bridal trends? “Woodsy” (not to be confused with “rustic”) themes: Greenery, florals, and natural, wooden accents are set to overtake the beloved rustic barn look.
Finally, the WeddingWire experts predict a much more unique menu heading our way. From interactive DIY food stations to roll-your-own sushi bars to creative wedding desserts, there’s a lot to look forward to eating (and Instagramming) at 2018’s weddings. Though don’t worry—good ol’ wedding cake won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
“Wedding cakes are back,” said Shiels. “The cake cutting ceremony is coming back. Couples want that photo in their album, the same one their parents have in theirs.”
