Women's Handcrafted Goods
text by: Caroline Biggs
Indego Africa works to empower Rwandan women by marketing their creative goods globally.

Having spent years traveling throughout West Africa, father-son duo Tom and Matt Mitro found themselves endlessly inspired by the region’s native crafts. In 2007, they launched Indego Africa with a mission to help Rwandan women escape the cycle of poverty through education, entrepreneurship, and fair trade. Partnering with multiple artisanal cooperatives, Indego Africa sells the women’s handcrafted goods online and in select boutiques, promoting financial independence and real-world business experience. Additionally, the company offers its artists essential job-training programs. “We believe in changing the world one woman at a time,” says Creative Director Deirdre King. “And that . . . is the key to social change.”
