Anne Zielger's Bright Idea
The duiker is an antelope whose name derives from the Dutch word meaning diver, for reclaiming its freedom by diving into cover and escaping capture. Two hundred years ago, former African slaves reclaimed their own freedom and made the little Caribbean island nation of Haiti the first ever black republic. So there's something poignant that their descendants, black artisans, now craft whimsical trophy heads of such African big game in paper mache, paint, and newsprint, perhaps to serve as symbols of an indomitable spirit in the face of adversity.
