up-and-coming artist: satya twena

Soon after taking a hat-making class at the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2010, Satya Twena’s millinery career took off. Beginning with crafting comfortable designs for her mother, who’d recently been diagnosed with cancer, she quickly expanded her line to include chic fascinators. Three years later, she happened to hear that the Makins Hats factory (the last institution of its kind in New York City) was closing. Immediately, Twena leaped into action, making a bid to purchase the city’s preeminent headwear workshop. Her efforts have helped the Makins Hats legacy thrive—and, after financing a major renovation, she’s provided New York City designers with a world-class facility for producing their wares.
