Vignettes are a terrific way to display collections of
personal trinkets and treasures found on travels or
at estate sales. With the proper mix of decorative
items, these arrangements can give your home an
extra dose of character.
Any horizontal surface in your home can serve as a backdrop for an artful assemblage of mementos and accessories; the elements you choose will determine your vignette’s wow factor, so keep things interesting by varying size, shape, and color. Create layers with stacks of books, decorative dishes, small vases of flowers, or compelling objets d’art. And keep texture in mind; consider mixing, for instance, gleaming brass, wood, leather, and something with patina.
Grouping a collection—such as match strikes, ashtrays, or miniature vases—together can result in an optimal visual impact. And feel free to include functional pieces: lacquered boxes and trays can hold such necessary (but not necessarily attractive) items as TV remote controls, keys, and sunglasses.
Remember, don’t be afraid to take inspiration from what you see around you in order to keep your displays fresh, personal, and unique.
