ABOUT THE ARTIST:
While earning his BA in Anthroplogy at UCLA, Jay Ezra Nayssan studied various cultures through their use of space and place. Buildings and dwellings became Nayssan’s way of “locating a culture.” Nayssan combined his understanding of space, along with his cultural sensitivity and appreciation of architecture, in order to become a builder. He continued his studies at HEC Paris (MBA, 2010) and NYU (Ms Construction Management, 2012) and now resides in Los Angeles where he works in construction. His photography aims to destroy the notion of buildings as inanimate monuments and to anthropomorphize them as living members of the local community. His goal is to have his photographs embody the personality and character of each city, allowing his viewers be transported to each city and to enter into dialogue with each building. It is through his humanization of buildings that one can perhaps unveil certain social themes specific to each community.
