ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Stevie Howell lives and works in Oakland, California. She received her BS from Skidmore College and studied painting at the Glasgow School of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work spans painting, photography, and textile design. Stevie's interest lies mainly in creating tension through a structure of oppositions, deriving from the hand and the digital process. She follows the creation and unraveling of an image, resulting in works appearing painterly and photographic at once. Her photo-based work uses photography as a means to address painting. With particular formal interest in the relationship between foreground and background and conceptually in the rhetoric of realism, playing with the notion of contemporary fact versus fiction. In her work, dichotomies are appreciated, exposed and brought together as a colorful whole.
