The Danish-born model and former owner of New York City’s high-style crafts shop Butik shares her holiday traditions.
What does Scandinavian Christmas mean to you?
Europe has a long Christmas history, and there is a deep love for anything from the past. Straw animals are a holiday classic going back to agrarian times. But I think they look cute and modern today.
How do you decorate at home?
I buy a giant tree for the living room and tiny
ones for every other room, then decorate them all differently. For example, my friend Leif Sigersen makes miniature flower vases. I hang a bunch on one tree and put a rose in each.
Any other customs?
My family and I stuff ourselves with homemade aebleskiver. It’s a pancake ball also for sale on every street corner back home. I can eat, like, 50 of them!
