You’d be hard-pressed to find a decorator who loves color as much as I do. From chartreuse green to cobalt blue, there's really no shade I shy away from—and I actually believe that maintaining a broad palette within your home helps it feel balanced and collected. But I think the key to using an abundance of color without a chaotic end result is a hefty dose of neutrals: I almost always paint or paper my walls in white, black, brown, or gray; these shades help establish a coherent design scheme and make perfect backdrops for colorful
furnishings and accessories. Below, a few of my favorite cheery pieces for brightening up a room.
The inspiration: pale gray walls in this apartment owned by Rita Konig are the perfect neutral backdrop for vibrant art and accessories.

If your walls and sofa are both neutral colors, you can pull off a colorful rug with an exciting pattern. This one is beautiful and well priced (especially in smaller sizes) and would look great layered atop a natural-fiber woven rug.
