In 2005, JOY CHO launched her blog, Oh Joy!, capturing the eyes of fun-loving,
color-dreaming design enthusiasts one
post at a time. Fast-forward nine years.
Still busy blogging and sharing snippets
of life with her husband and her
cute-as-a-button daughter, Ruby, Cho
has also found time to design products
(her collaboration with Land of Nod
debuts this week).
Cho gives domino the scoop on
why her latest collection will appeal to
the young—and the young at heart. Are
you jumping for Joy yet? (We sure are!)
Occupation: Creative director and blogger at Oh Joy Studio
Current location: Los Angeles, California
How would you describe
your personal style?
I love mixing lots of color and pattern
with a touch of whimsy in the way I
dress and how I decorate.
WHAT ROOM OF THE HOUSE
MAKES YOU FEEL HAPPIEST?
My living room. It’s the place where we
gather as a family. So while it’s the room I
feel like is constantly a mess, it’s also the
one with the most stories to tell.
WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF
ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
You can be whatever you want to be.
WHAT MAKES A HOME BEAUTIFUL?
Great natural light is the basis for any
beautiful space. It makes a room feel light
and bright instantly. I think a home is most
beautiful when it shows off the personalities
and tastes of the people who inhabit it.
WHAT’S THE BEST DECORATING
TIP YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
Collect as you go. You don’t have to choose
one style or another—all the pieces you add
to your home will go together because they
reflect your personal taste.
WHAT INSPIRED YOUR LAND
OF NOD COLLECTION?
Color, pattern, and some of my favorite things
in design. The first collection is inspired by ice
cream, my daughter’s favorite food. It has
sprinkle-covered bedding, pillows shaped like
ice cream cones and cherries, and a duvet
inspired by an ice cream cone’s texture. The
other collection was inspired by kids’
drawings of simple shapes, such as circles,
stars, and hearts. They’re designed to mix
and match with each other as well as with
solid bedding you might already own.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE
PIECE FROM THE COLLECTION?
I love so many. A couple of favorites include
the ice cream pillow because it instantly
brings a smile to my face, and the
gold-dipped lamp—it’s a piece you could
even have in an adult room!
