elsie de wolfe’s ottomans
I’ve always been a huge admirer of Elsie de Wolfe, a designer who had a real knack for the unexpected flourish—such as these leopard-patterned velvet ottomans, which were incorporated into the formal decor of her Sutton Place townhouse. Now, my tiny Manhattan apartment is far from being a townhouse, but for years I held out hopes of approximating the effect of de Wolfe’s sitting room. Then, this fall, I happened upon the “Rocco” ottoman from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams and bought a pair. Re-covered in Calico’s “Jamil” velvet, they bring a touch of Sutton Place’s old New York grandeur to my Upper West Side living room!
